Living in Sri Lanka I have witnessed many things. I saw my father (who was in the police) during the ’83 riots save many Tamils buy transporting them in his jeep to safe places. I also saw many thugs rioting during that time. I also saw many Sinhala people risking their lives and helping the Tamil people by making them hide in their own homes. To this date I am to come across a Sinhala person who is not saddened by what happened in ’83. This was for 12 soldiers.
After ’83 and estimated 24,000 soldiers have died in the war and I don’t think anyone blamed the Tamil people for this nor was there a repeat of ’83. Over the last few days I have witnessed how the western province is collecting things to send to the IDPs in the North. We have all given something which was what happened during the tsunami too. I personally visited the IDP camps 12 years ago in Vavuniya for the people who escaped from the LTTE. No one cared for their welfare then apart from the government and a few families of the armed forces who used to go and give them rations and clothing.
In Sri Lanka people live in harmony and there are many cross ethnic marriages and anyone has the chance to make it. Some of the most successful business people in this country are Tamils. My business partner is Tamil and my cousin brother is married to a Tamil. Sri Lanka is not a racially broken country like the US which suppressed the black man for so long. And I don’t think having a black president has put a complete stop to this. The LTTE was a terror organization which had great promotional skills to fool the international community. I don’t think any terror group in the world was this organized militarily and promotionally as the LTTE. This blog was created to let people know the real picture of this beautiful country, Sri Lanka. One Sri Lanka a peaceful home for all.
